The SMILES Conference, “Islands at a Crossroads: Rethinking Ecosystem Services in Small and Medium-Sized Islands,” was successfully held in Brussels on 24–25 June. The event provided an excellent opportunity to enhance the visibility and impact of the SMILES COST Action across Europe.
By bringing together researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, the conference highlighted the urgent policy gaps and the growing environmental and socio-economic challenges faced by small and medium-sized islands. It also reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange to support resilient, sustainable island communities.
Together, we’re raising awareness, building stronger networks, and shaping evidence-based solutions for Europe’s islands.
